María José Estarán became a Marie Curie Fellow of ULB in 2015, being this her first post-doctoral experience. After obtaining early-stage research fellowships (Universidad de Zaragoza, 2006; CSIC, 2007-2008), she became predoctoral FPU fellow (UZ). Thanks to this public fellowship, she could obtain the DEA with a research on the epigraphical sources and documents of bilingualism in Hispania and also co-ordinate (together with F. Beltrán) the Numismatic Data Base within Hesperia Data Bank.

During the elaboration of her doctoral dissertation she created a corpus comprising West Mediterranean texts written in two languages, coin legends included, a research which has been possible thanks to multiple secondments in Italy (EEHAR), one in France (AOROC) and in the UK (Ioannou Center, University of Oxford). María José’s PhD thesis, El latín y las lenguas locales en las culturas epigráficas del Occidente Romano. Las inscripciones bilingües y mixtas, defended in 2014, was awarded the Premio Pastor de Estudios Clásicos. During her postdoctoral research she studies pre-Roman dedicatory inscriptions from Italy, Gaul and Spain from a pragmatic point of view.
