David Stifter is Professor of Old Irish at the Maynooth University Department of Early Irish since 2011. Before that, from 2000–2008, he was contract assistant at the Department of Linguistics at the University of Vienna. From 2006–2011, he was director and prime investigator in three different research projects in Vienna: A dictionary of the Old Irish glosses in the Milan manuscript Ambr. C301 infr. http://www.univie.ac.at/indogermanistik/milan_glosses.htm); Lexicon Leponticum – an interactive etymological dictionary plus edition of texts of Lepontic (http://www.univie.ac.at/lexlep/wiki/Main_Page); Celtic Language Remains in Austria (http://www.univie.ac.at/austria-celtica/personalnames/).

In 2015, he was awarded a Consolidator Grant of the European Research Council for the research project Chronologicon Hibernicum (grant agreement No. 647351, Horizon 2020).

Professor Stifter has published widely on Old and Middle Irish language and literature, and on the Continental Celtic languages (Celtiberian, Gaulish and Lepontic). His introductory handbook Sengoídelc. Old Irish for Beginners (Syracuse University Press 2006) was awarded the 2006 Michael J. Durkan Prize for Books on Language and Culture of the American Conference for Irish Studies. He is founder and editor of the interdisciplinary Celtic-studies journal Keltische Forschungen (Vienna 2006–). He is a founding member and secretary of the Societas Celtologica Europaea (European Association of Celtic Studies scholars). His research interests lie in comparative Celtic linguistics (esp. Old Irish and Continental Celtic), in the chronology of language changes of Irish, and in language contact in the ancient world and on the early medieval British Isles.
