María José Estarán Tolosa is currently Research Affiliate of the ERC Project LatinNow: Latinization of the North-Western Provinces: Sociolinguistics, Epigraphy and Archaeology (University of Nottingham / University of Oxford, Center for the Study of Ancient Documents).

After obtaining her PhD in Ancient History (Epigraphy) in 2014, she has worked at the Université libre de Bruxelles from 2015 to 2017 as a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Researcher. Within that period, she has been visiting scholar at the École Normale Supérieure de Paris (AOROC) and Università deli Studi di Roma Tor Vergata. She has previously been a visiting scholar in the Escuela Española de Historia y Arqueología en Roma and the Ioannou Center for Classical Studies (University of Oxford). She is a member of the project Hesperia (http://hesperia.ucm.es), being in charge of the Numismatic database.

Her main field of research are the cultural contacts and phenomena occurred in the Western Mediterranean territories as a result of the Roman domination. She has developed her work particularly in two lines of research: bilingualism and linguistic changes towards Latinization, and cultural and religious changes documented in sacred dedications. She has been awarded the Premio Pastor 2014 and the Premio Susini 2017 for her book Epigrafía Bilingüe del Occidente Romano. El latín y las lenguas locales en las inscripciones bilingües y mixtas (Zaragoza, 2016).
